What is the tax 1%?
This is a donation opportunity in Hungary where employees and entrepreneurs can give 1% of their personal income tax to a nonprofit organization of their choice
This does not cost anything extra. It is part of the tax they have already paid. They simply decide where this 1% should go, and the government transfers it accordingly.
At Bagázs, we work towards an inclusive society where people living in segregated Roma settlements also have a real chance to achieve their goals.
Our work in the settlements is built on a holistic approach. We see communities as interconnected systems, which is why every resident can connect to our individual or group programs in some way.
We believe that every member of a community matters and deserves respect and attention. At the same time, every interaction has an impact beyond itself — shaping the wider community as a whole.
We do not distribute donations, and we do not focus only on (talented) children. Instead, we aim to create new frameworks of opportunity for everyone, empowering people to thrive through their own strength and potential.
Creating inclusive spaces is central to our mission. We strive to bring as many young people as possible to camps and after-school programs outside the settlements, where children can build new friendships, experience success, and learn to navigate unfamiliar environments with confidence.
We believe that the spaces and places created for connections will benefit our entire society in the long run!

How Do We Use Your 1% Tax Donation?
With your donation, you support the work of our association.
Through our Home-Based Development Programs, we work with preschool and school-age children not in an after-school center, but in their natural home environment. We play and learn together in a familiar setting, allowing parents to actively participate and strengthen their own skills and competencies as well.
In our Child Mentoring Program, we focus on helping pre-teens and teenagers discover and explore their interests. Mentors and mentees work together for eight to ten weeks, meeting once a week to develop a project. The program concludes with a project presentation, where children share their experiences with their peers, learn from one another, and proudly showcase the exciting topics they are passionate about.
The “Hold and Lift” Program aims to prevent young people from dropping out of public education. We support them in successfully completing primary school, obtaining a vocational qualification, or graduating from secondary school. Participants meet online with volunteers several times a week to work on homework together and prepare for tests and exams.
With your support, we can send even more children from the Roma settlements of Bag and Dány to inclusive summer camps, and enable more young people to choose extracurricular activities that match their interests.
Through our Adult Mentoring Program, adults living in the settlements can also experience the attention and care that everyone deserves. We work to strengthen connections between settlement residents, public institutions, and people outside the settlements. This helps adults build the confidence and skills needed to assert their rights in legal, healthcare, and educational matters, while developing effective coping strategies that bring them closer to finding their place in the world.
In 2020, with the support of NANE, we launched the Women’s Strength Program, whose goal remains the same to this day: creating a supportive community where women living in Roma settlements can draw strength from one another. While being a woman is never easy anywhere, Roma women living in segregated settlements face even greater challenges. A safe women’s community helps uncover inner resources that can carry them through the most difficult moments. Within our program, women can speak openly about self-confidence, body image, desires and boundaries, women’s and children’s rights, and relationships. We also encourage participants to explore the world beyond the settlement, gain new experiences, and feel empowered to follow their own path.
In the Boys’ Club, we work with 12–17-year-old boys living in the settlements through group sessions where we talk about life in the settlement, school, friendships, family relationships, and dating. Using cooperative and experiential learning methods, as well as debate club techniques, we explore the topics the boys bring to the group. And of course, we also play games, create things, and have fun together.
The goal of the program is to offer teenage boys meaningful alternatives for spending their free time, strengthen their friendships, practice assertive communication, and have honest conversations about non-violent, safe, and equal relationships and sexuality. It is important to us that boys, too, feel free to express their emotions and aspirations, and receive support in achieving their goals.
Shanco is the social enterprise of the Bagázs Association, where women living in the Roma settlement of Dány create unique textile products — often using patterns or leftover materials from Hungarian designer brands. The enterprise provides women with the opportunity to work responsibly in a safe environment and earn their own income.
By choosing a Shanco product, customers support social responsibility and sustainability, while directly contributing to the success of women living in the Dány Roma settlement. We believe this initiative enriches not only the women working within the enterprise, but also their families, their immediate community, and society as a whole.
